As you might have realized by now, this page is kinda dead ... :-) I still don't use office applications much, and if I do, it's mostly OpenOffice.org. The rest of this page here is from 2001 or something. Linux Office Suites and Word ProcessorsThis part of the page will not be updated too often. In my work, I hardly ever use word processors, spreadsheets or programs like that. -- I use vi and vim and I seldom write letters and stuff like that. :-)
Star Office 5.1 vs. Applixware Office Suite 4.4.1 None of the programs was difficult to install on my system, just read the README file and you're up and running in no time. The first that hits you is that Applixware is not as fancy as StarOffice. But it seems much more stable and much faster. Star Office seems to make it's own windows environment inside X Windows. The only benefits I can see with StarOffice, is that the filters for reading and writing Microsoft Office files are better than in Applixware and the user interface is more like MS Office (if you call that a benefit). Applixware's filters suit my needs, though. You can read Word 97, Excel 97 and PowerPoint 97 files, and you can write to formats that MS Office 97 users can read. For instance Applix Words can read MS Word 97 files, and it writes RTF files. StarOffice can both read from and write to the MS Word 97 format. My conclusion is that Applixware is best, due to better performance and stability. StarOffice on the other hand is free for personal use and it might be better if you receive many complex files i MS Word 97 format. Personally, I'll stick to Applixware. You can buy Applixware from Applix or from SuSE (Linux Office Suite 99 comes with SuSe Linux and a backup program in addition to Applix Office.)
